Why are minority teachers leaving the profession at a high rate?

The media is spreading the idea that there is a shortage of minority science teachers in the STEM areas. Yet, minority science teachers are leaving the profession at a rate of five times that of others. This research study is an attempt to know the reasons why this is true and to come up with solutions to the shortage.

Researcher Background

Iris Pagan: Dr. Iris Teresa Pagan has a compelling personal story and has taught science education for over 25 years in mostly a prestigious international school and in public ,private, charter and parochial schools as well. Not to waste her summers she organized and conducted summer programs whose goal was to enrich the academic background of minority students. She has loved science teaching and the students she has encountered. A graduate of Pace University and Columbia Teachers College, she wants to explore the question of why minorities leave an area of education in which they are so much needed.
